Side by side. Decided with knowledge.
See the differences that matter, and the Academy lessons that explain them.
Entry and fees: Neither asks for a minimum deposit and both advertise commission-free trading — the arithmetic still differs. Robinhood trades stocks, ETFs and options at $0 commission. Wealthsimple trades Canadian and US stocks at CAD $0 commission but applies a 1.5% FX fee on US trading, which drops to 0% on the Premium tier. Buy US names regularly from Canada, then, and you pay either the FX fee or the Premium upgrade. Robinhood earns instead through payment for order flow — stated in its business model and in its execution figure of around 50 ms.
Products and platforms: The hard difference is options. Robinhood trades US options commission-free; Wealthsimple offers no options at all. The instrument list is otherwise similarly lean — Robinhood: stocks, ETFs, options, crypto; Wealthsimple: stocks, ETFs, crypto. Both back an app plus web rather than a professional terminal, and both note a lack of advanced analysis tools in their own profiles. Wealthsimple does bring automated portfolios, a robo-advisor component Robinhood does not list; its execution runs through TSX routing, also quoted at around 50 ms.
Profile and verdict: The real point is geography. Robinhood (3.9/5 from 2,500 reviews, founded 2013 in Menlo Park) is SEC- and FINRA-regulated and available only to US customers. Wealthsimple (4.1/5 from 1,700 reviews, founded 2014 in Toronto) is IIROC-regulated and available only to Canadian customers. For most readers, then, the decision is made by where they live rather than by the feature list. If the choice is genuinely open: options exist only at Robinhood, automated portfolios only at Wealthsimple.
