Bull Call Spread
Capital-efficient bullish strategy with capped risk
The bull call spread consists of buying an ATM or slightly ITM call and simultaneously selling an OTM call with a higher strike. The purchased call participates in the upward move; the sold call partially finances it and caps maximum profit. You pay a net debit for this strategy, which is also your maximum loss. Compared to buying a single call, the bull call spread is significantly cheaper.
Advantages
- Significantly cheaper than single long calls (short call finances premium)
- Clearly defined maximum loss (debit paid)
- Fully participates in price gains up to the short strike
- Better return-to-risk ratio than direct stock purchase with limited capital
Risks
- Maximum profit capped (price gains above the short strike are not captured)
- Time decay works against you (debit trade)
- Two option transactions mean more bid-ask spread costs
- More complex to manage than a simple long call
